Alongside the documentary, the team produced a companion featurette designed to extend the conversation that Belonging Beyond Brown begins. Where the film documents history, the featurette deepens the call to action, giving audiences a closer look at the mission behind the work and the urgency that drives it. Built as a standalone piece that could travel independently of the film, the featurette serves as both a recruitment tool and an entry point for new audiences, communities, and partners looking to engage with the Black educator pipeline in a meaningful way.

“Inside Belonging Beyond Brown,” the featurette, extends the film’s themes through conversation and reflection. Director Nina Gilbert shares the project’s vision and the importance of documenting the stories of Black educators whose work has shaped generations. Joining her is author and scholar Dr. Daniel Black, whose voice in the film speaks to the deeper cultural and historical traditions that sustain Black education.

The conversation also includes perspectives from the next generation of educators and leaders. Two students reflect on their experiences of belonging and learning, while Dr. Terrance Mitchell, the Associate Director of the Morehouse Center for Excellence in Education, discusses the ongoing work to prepare and support future Black educators. Dr. Hideko Sera, the Director of EIB [Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging] at Morehouse College, also offers institution-specific data that outlines the need for psychological and physical safety factors in discussing belonging, highlighting the connection between the film’s themes and the College’s work.

Together, these voices expand the story beyond the film itself. They invite us to consider where we have been and what it will take to build educational spaces where belonging is promised and practiced.
